The Crucial First 72 Hours – Standing with Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa
In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful storms ever to strike the Caribbean, Jamaica is facing unimaginable devastation. With sustained winds of 185 mph and torrential rain exceeding 30 inches in some areas, Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane, leaving communities flooded, homes destroyed, and essential services crippled.
The first 24 to 72 hours after such a disaster are the most critical. This is when every moment counts, when access MUST be created by local authorities and community partners to clear roads, mobilize Emergency Response services, gain access and SAVE LIVES.
We are currently in the Rescue and Recovery mode.
Additionally, having access to clean water, food, shelter, and medical supplies can mean the difference between life and death. Roads are impassable, power is out, and communication is limited, making rapid relief efforts essential to reach those most in need.
Now, more than ever, our brothers and sisters in Jamaica need us. As a Caribbean community and as compassionate people, it is our responsibility to come together, to give, to share, to volunteer, and to stand in solidarity. Whether through donations, supplies, or volunteer support, every act of kindness brings hope and helps rebuild lives.
Together, we can show that even in the face of the strongest storm, the strength of our unity is greater.
The road to recovery is not a 'sprint' but rather a 'marathon' - as Jamaica continues its road to recovery, and we will continue to advocate for support and provide updates.
Jamaica continues its road to recovery, and we’ve got the latest updates.
